Spiritual Discipline of The Word

Paul wrote to Timothy these words, “All scripture is given by the inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that we might be complete.”

Are we able to be corrected or are we more interested in correcting? When I look at Jesus’ teaching, He rarely corrected individuals. His teachings were targeted at believers.

For example, In the Gospel of Matthew 11:1-6 we read that John the Baptist sent two disciples to ask, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” Now John had Identified Jesus as the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. John had baptized Jesus, heard the voice of God proclaim “This is my Son.” Now he is asking are You the Coming One? Jesus tells the disciples of John to go back and tell John all the things they have witnessed. But Jesus adds these words of correction and rebuke. “Blessed is the one who is not offended because of Me.”

Do you think Jesus was targeting the Scribes, the Pharisee’s, and all those who didn’t believe He was the Messiah? Or Was Jesus correcting and rebuking John the Baptist? John had proclaimed who Jesus was. But now John is in prison. Most likely aware his days were numbered. Questioning the plan of God, and if Jesus was the Messiah. Israel’s kingdom had not been reestablished, Roman was still in power. John the Baptist question was based upon His belief of what Jesus’ purpose was. John’s question, “Are you the One”, is really a statement you’re not doing what I thought you were going to do. Or you’re not doing this fast enough.

Is Jesus offended when we question His ways, His plan? Do we offend Jesus when He is not moving fast enough for us? When He is not going along with the plans we had in mind? Jesus was correcting John the Baptist because he was not seeing clearly.  Jesus told John’s disciples to go back and tell John all you have seen. Jesus wants John to know what your disciples witnessed is the plan, you need to correct your understanding of what My Kingdom will look like. What my purpose is.

Maybe the toughest part of spiritual discipline is not offending Jesus by what we think He should be doing. When we become impatient in Jesus’ timing, and His way of doing things in His Kingdom. Am I offending God when I question How He is working in the Church, or who He is working through?

Lord show me if you find any offense in me. In Jesus Name.
